Gabe Hudson talks to the host of "Booked Up with Jen Taub" about her life journey and the process of discovering who she was and what was most important to her
Gabe, every time I listen to you chatting with these marvels and I learn more about your journey and the imposter syndrome you felt as a professor (the same I felt teaching at NYU... that the cops were going to show up at any given moment and arrest me for not being smart enough), the more I am in awe! And I just love Jen's questioning of everything as a young girl... I was that girl too, asking why all the same people got cast every year in the plays, staging the half-joking walkouts, but also I didn't know there were OTHERS out there like me until I got to the east coast. I love these kindred spirits you bring out each week. Huzzah, mister!
Gosh, Alisa, your comments here fill me w so much joy bcuz really the sense of community & connection to like-minded souls or way certain ppl's journeys resonate w our our own is big part of KVR but also of course I'm just bumbling along making it up as I go along (not that I'd have it any other way) so your words of encouragement & hearing how Jen's episode resonated w you is the best possible gift. The degree to which many of else felt isolated before moving to e. coast or the internet is mind blowing really. Oh, and I am abt to release like 5 v cool episodes of KVR in a row, one each day for next 5 days, not that I expect you to make time for each one right away. But I just didn't want you to think I lost my mind or anyway.
One thing I realized is I don't like to sit on episodes, I get really excited when I interview ppl & then spend couple days making the episode, & at that point I want to send them out to you all. While they're fresh.
Prev when I worked w other folks on podcast I was forced to sit on interviews for months, & that drove me insane. So I swore to myself, never again.
I'm the same way about sitting on stories... I am sitting on 2 hilarious ones rn because of editorial calendars and Halloween and it makes me totally bananas... I just want to release them both into the ether because they are so funny and I know women will be like YES!!! Finally someone is admitting these ridiculous things exist, but alas... I have to sit on my hands. You are so lucky you run things. I will be cheering you on to keep distracted. :)
I think you can take full credit for my pivot to audio, Gabe! I mean, it's not like I didn't know about audio before, so clearly chatting with you changed the trajectory in the best possible way.
You were raised by Audio God #1 & you even did work w Audio God #1 so I appreciate you tolerating my self-righteous blithering abt audio bcuz all sound waves rise together & honestly I see each one of creating together an Audio Empire for the Ages (read last part in loud spooky voice)
Ha! It was a slightly creative version but I know from long experience how impossible it is to guess the right pronunciation from its letters. And all that was surpassed by the thrill I got from hearing my name on your podcast. Hooray! Made me happy.
I really vibed with this interview and appreciated Jen's insights. We share a lot of similar experiences (e.g., Michigan, Wall Street) and based on this discussion I'd say we've arrived at a very similar worldview.
Gabe: Michigan is decidedly the Midwest.
Re: your questions: 1) and 2): I don't yet have a podcast, but I'm in the process of creating one with an awesome partner. We're kicking around names now, and we're jumping right over audio all the way to video. 3) Yes, 100%. 4) Probably 45 minutes. 5) I'll now invalidate my answer to 4) by saying Dan Carlin's Hardcore History. I can't explain it, you just have to listen.
Amran I am thrilled that you connected w Jen's ep like that. Cool to hear abt alignment in yr journeys.
In my mind Michigan is too fancy to be Midwest (yes I know abt UP, etc).
Sadly, bcuz I love Michigan & even have family there, one of my new side hustles is to convince the world that Michigan is not Midwest but rather America's elite 4th coast.
I'm totally gonna check out Hardcore History.
I wanna hear more abt your podcast slash video thing slash world dominationcast. Let's talk.
Thank you so much for your podcast with the talented, fast-talking Jen Taub. It is a delightful surprise to have come across.
I know of Jen Taub (& have her book big dirty money) from, initially, through dear MaryTrump's Nerds... The rest is this wide horizon and great universe. I love her and her work... Your excellent interview with Taub is wonderful & illuminating and happy-making.
Oh my gosh Mahesh Pherwani lovely to meet you too & thanks so much for your super kind words abt my interview w Jen Taub (like you, I am a big Jen Taub fan).
Jen's interview is first one we decided to let go longer & bcuz of your positive response to Jen's interview (& other listeners) we are going to stick w longer format. Thank you.
Sending warm wishes to you in London from Cape Cod.
Omg ty so much, Jeffrey, I honestly would not be enjoying this process of making this podcast half as much if you were not here to hear the episodes & letting me know. When it comes to listener such as yrself, I regard us as co-creating this journey.
Get ready, becuz I am abt to release a bunch of episodes day after day, not that I expect you to have time to listen to them right away. But I realized I hate sitting on these conversations. Because I'm so excited abt them, once I finish the episode, I am so exited to get it out to you. I refuse to sit on them or keep them in "the can." So my thinking around podcast episodes is changing. Anyway, you can expect a new one in next couple hours & then 5 more this week. All v diff conversations, all imho frankly fascinating guests who I learn a ton from. I'm super grateful, Jeffrey, to you. If at any point there's someone you'd like to see me interview, don't hesitate to let me know. Cheers, buddy.
To the question of an intriguing podcast I’d say The Gilmour Podcast. Why? Because the discussions are deep and insightful. They talk about night and death and time and sex in unexpected ways.
Ty so much for this recommendation, Susan, I just subscribed to The Gilmore Podcast! I'm always on lookout for new cool lit stuff in podcast space, which to me seems generally underutilized for the book crowd!

A pleasure to support you and your work, Gabe
You are a sincere blessing, Eleanor, & I hope I didn't mispronounce yr last name too badly (which fwiw I think is a v cool name)

Haha, I'm sure Michigan would love to be considered a member of the coastal elite.
Hardcore History is absolutely incredible. It probably peaked about a decade ago with some of the super long series on WW1 and the Achaemenid Empire.
Emailing you now.

Wow, it's so exciting to hear what you've got planned for us! And I get that you don't want to wait to get them out there. I can't wait!
